Well, uh, no, vape cartridges are not universal.

Even though the “510-thread” connection offers the highest level of compatibility and fits a wide variety of batteries, there are still major differences across the market. It is still incredibly easy to end up in an awkward situation where your cart won’t screw on, or worse, it connects but won’t produce any vapor.

When people say “universal,” they are usually talking about the 510-thread standard, which is widely used across many vape batteries and cartridges. However, even if the threads match, the cartridges themselves come in completely different diameters (like 10.5mm or 11.2mm) and capacities (0.5ml, 1.0ml, 2.0ml).

On top of that, closed pod systems (like RELX, SP2S, or YOOZ) are shaped differently—some flat, some round, some big, some small—and are completely designed by their respective brands. Because of this, cross-compatibility is never guaranteed.

3 Core Factors That Affect Cartridge Compatibility

1. Thread and Connection Type

This is the very first barrier to compatibility. While the 510-thread interface has become the industry standard for open vape systems, many major brands use proprietary magnetic connections or snap-in pods that are strictly non-interchangeable.

• 510-Thread Cartridges: The most traditional “open” style. Usually made of glass or plastic tubes, these are commonly used for thick oils, CBD, or various flavored distillates. They feature a mouthpiece at the top and screw threads at the bottom.
• Closed Magnetic/Snap-in Pods: The mainstream choice for pod-system vapes. These have no threads; instead, they slide directly into the device using magnets or plastic clips (e.g., RELX, YOOZ).
• Disposables: All-in-one units where the cartridge and battery are permanently built together. You cannot separate them; you simply toss the device when it’s empty.

2. Device Shape and Size

Even if two devices share the exact same interface, their physical dimensions might not match. For example, some cartridges are designed to be wider. If you use a “concealed” or drop-in box battery where the cartridge goes inside a hidden chamber, a thick cart simply won’t fit. If it can’t physically fit into the slot, it doesn’t matter if the threads match.

3. Power and Voltage Requirements

Different types of extracts (thick oil, CBD, or standard e-juice) require different heating temperatures. Some premium ceramic-core cartridges demand higher voltage to vaporize properly. If your battery’s power output is too low, it won’t be able to “drive” the cartridge, leading to zero vapor production, frequent clogging, or leaking.

How to Check Compatibility Before You Buy？

The safest bet is always to check the specifications of both your cartridge and battery before purchasing. Pay close attention to the thread type, physical dimensions, and recommended voltage range. If both products state they are “510-threaded,” they will usually work together, but it’s always smart to double-check the size and power details.

• Check the Connection: Look at the top of your current vape battery. If it has a screw-in hole, you need a 510-thread cartridge. If it is a smooth, open slot (usually with magnetic metal pins inside), you must buy a proprietary pod made specifically for that brand.
• Stick to Brand and Model: If you are using a closed-pod system, you must search strictly for the exact brand and generation model (e.g., “RELX Infinity Pods” or “SP2S Generation 2”).
